Closed captions blocking technical terms that can also be used as slurs

Hi,

I have been on a few calls recently where technical language is being **** by MS Teams. I wondered if this could be looked into as it is causing accessibility issues for some of our team who are hearing impaired and rely on closed captions, but are struggling with the blocking of some technical terms.

I understand that some words have developed a secondary slang/slur meaning but in the context of a professional space in the environmental sector, censoring the word 'dyke' is not helpful or necessary.

Just wondered if there are other cases of this and if there is anything that can be done in order to ensure all our staff can be fully involved in technical calls. Thanks

    Hi Bethany,

Thank you for posting on the forum today. I’m Bambi, a user like you and I’ll be happy to assist you.

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the closed captions in MS Teams.

I understand that some technical terms may be filtered out by the profanity filter, which is meant to prevent offensive or inappropriate language from being displayed. However, this may also affect the accessibility and clarity of the captions for some users.

Fortunately, there is a way to turn off the profanity filter for live captions in Teams meetings. You can do this by following these steps:

Go to Settings in Teams > Captions and transcripts Uncheck the option “Filter profane words in meeting captions” Restart Teams and join a meeting or start a call Turn on live captions by selecting the More icon in the meeting toolbar > Language and speech > Turn on live captions

Here is a link for reference: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-public-preview/now-in-public-preview-profanity-filtering-on-off-control-for/td-p/3791213

If this doesn’t help, you can send a feedback to the Microsoft Teams here https://support.microsoft.com/office/c0fb6297-22af-4db5-b19b-69e0a6720927

I hope this information helps. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.

    Best Regards, Bambi
