Microsoft Teams - Something went wrong. [2002] error

On trying to launch Microsoft Teams on Mac; it is asking me for my password multiple times to access information stored in my keychain; I enter the password multiple times; then I get the following error: Something went wrong. [2002] with the Correlation code detail shown in the image.

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall Teams (per my company's Tech Support), but to no avail. I've been using Teams without exception - although earlier this week, it started to ask me multiple times for the passwords to access information stored in my key chain, which I provided.

This is clearly an issue with Teams, or possibly Defender (they updated silently, together).

    (rant, deleted)

(Next day: not a solution, only a work-around so read on...) I've found a solution -

Open a Terminal session and type this:

    rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams

And then keep that command in a Notes file. You know...for next time (because you'll need it).

[You also might see a /Library/Application Support/com.microsoft.teams, but that's not the one you need to delete. The one in the Microsoft directory (...it all blends together, mea culpa) is the correct cache file - killing it will introduce you to a newer first-run panel and then you should be able to get it running after that. ]

Now try to reinstall. This should let you into Teams for a while - mine was the next day, after it came out of sleep, it fell back to it's problematic state. I appeared "offline" and restarting the app gave the 2002 error. Running that command allowed me to log back in.

    (rant continues)

This is clearly an issue with Teams.

The login panel on restart is the OLD one, while the login panel on killing the support file is the NEW, rounder-edged version. It should only be the new one, so something pointing to an old resource and killing the login process.

At no point should there be something residual in the system once you've cleaned it out. We should all be able to reinstall an app cleanly but Teams periodically seems to just destroy itself or not fully clean out a systems file.

I have the same issue as of this morning on my Mac (iPhone and iPad work fine).

In my case, Teams logs in automatically, but then it says that "something went wrong 2002".

The problem is that I have no way to log in manually because the app keeps rebooting on its own - which is quite frustrating.

I uninstalled and reinstalled already a couple of times, but the problem is always there.

    Could anyone please help?

    Thanks!

All I can suggest (since Microsoft seems to have abandoned us here) is that you do what I wrote above:

Open a Terminal session and type this:

    rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams

And then keep that command in a Notes file. You know...for next time (because you'll need it).

Was speaking to a Windows Teams user and they mentioned that Microsoft has changed the underlying technology in Teams, from Electron to their own stack. I bet anyone dollars to donuts that they left some underlying Electron code that identifies the user and that's causing the issue.

Now, I have 2 near-identical logins when I open Teams (after the "rm" command above) - an older one with my Teams avatar and a newer one that has no profile image at all, but both will accept the login and open Teams. And no matter what, if I don't remove the user support files before the next run, I won't get that selection panel.

This is a dirty install - you can't seemingly clean it all out.

    Be careful.

    1. Reset Keychain Passwords:

Not a good idea! If you do this (due to a problem related only to teams), you might lose all saved log in data for other applications in your keychain.

    Hi all

Reset Keychain Passwords might certainly solve the issue, though being quite the brute force solution..

    Solution:

Search for any password used by any microsoft service in the keychain and delete those entries manually. That was the ONLY solution which worked for me.

Only removing MS Teams entries did nothing, not even creating a new user account on the device did any good.

If a Password cannot be deleted, search for it manually in the Keychain. There is a bug in the Apple Keychains search feature.

If that's not enough, clear all PWs again after uninstalling MS Teams with this awesome lightweight tool: FreeMacSoft AppCleaner

And if that does not work, remove ALL Microsoft Software from the machine, clear PWs and try again. (That was necessary in past years)

The favorite reply from Microsoft to clear the cache of MS Teams is utter nonsense. They don't even seem know where the cache is located on MacOS.

So my suggestion for the long-term:
Do NOT rely on any Microsoft services on Mac for your business needs. Microsoft will refuse to spend time finding solutions for the MacOS.

And Apple will most likely refuse to look into Problems with Microsoft Software on their hardware/os. Apple might even be happy that people struggle with Microsoft Tools :)

Obviously same the other way around :)

    Good luck!

    Hello ,

I'm Shalom and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

This error usually relates to authentication or connectivity issues. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

    1. Clear Cache and Cookies: Clear the cache and cookies for Microsoft Teams. To do this, go to "Settings" > "Privacy" > "Manage Website Data", search for the Microsoft Teams website, and click "Remove All". Then restart Teams and try again.
    2. Update Microsoft Teams: Ensure you have the latest version of Microsoft Teams installed. Go to the Teams app in the Applications folder, right-click, and select "Check for Updates".
    3. Check Date and Time Settings: Incorrect date and time settings can cause authentication issues. Make sure your Mac's date and time settings are accurate and set to update automatically.
    4. Reset Keychain Passwords: Since you've been repeatedly prompted for keychain passwords, there might be an issue with keychain access. You can try resetting your keychain passwords. Go to "Utilities" > "Keychain Access", then click on "Keychain Access" in the top menu and select "Preferences". Click the "Reset My Default Keychain" option.
    5. Check Proxy Settings: If your organization uses a proxy server, ensure your proxy settings are correctly configured. Go to "System Preferences" > "Network" > select your active network connection > "Advanced" > "Proxies". Make sure the settings are correct.
    6. Check Network Connection: Ensure your Mac has a stable and active internet connection. Sometimes network issues can lead to authentication problems.
    7. Temporarily Disable Antivirus/Firewall: Your antivirus or firewall settings could potentially interfere with Teams' authentication. Temporarily disable them and see if the issue persists.
    8. Check with IT Support: If you're using Teams in a corporate environment, it's possible that there might be specific configurations or policies causing the issue. Contact your company's IT support for assistance.
    9. Recreate User Profile (Advanced Step): If the issue persists, creating a new user profile on your Mac and setting up Teams there could help identify if the problem is specific to your user profile.

Remember to back up important data before attempting advanced steps like recreating user profiles.

    Best Regards, Shalom
