How does Microsoft fix the bugs?

Does it ever happen with anyone here or via the official Microsoft support that Microsoft fixed the bug you found? For example:

  • You found a bug in Microsoft product.
  • You posted it here or to official support.
  • They admitted and accepted it as a bug/defect.
  • In a few weeks/months/years they send you an update, that bug is fixed and here is the patch or it is fixed in Service Pack N/KBNNN.

So far it never happened to me and I was never able to find any public posts where it happened. But it often happens with other vendors I am working with. If it never happened with you also add a comment please.

    Hi @Aleksei Zadvorkin ,

in my experience it is related to the MS product, the product group and the MS support if you get a personal update after a reported bug is fixed.

I got updated by the product group directly after reported bugs are fixed. But maybe this is not the usual process because there was a direct contact with the product group.

Bug fixes are tested / vetted then at some point rolled into a cumulative update.

Yes I have reported many bugs and some do get fixed. Depends upon the product group though. I've had maybe 2 bugs fixed in Windows over the course of almost 3 decades. Visual Studio and Dev groups have fixed many issues I have reported.

The factors that determine whether a "bug" is fixed include:

    • Is it specific to you :: Common for highly customized systems and overclocking
    • Is it reproducible :: If it cannot be repro'd then it cannot be fixed
    • Is it actually a Windows issue :: Many issues are not Windows but third party drivers or software
    • How many people are reporting it :: Focus is always on most impactful issues
    • How severe is it :: Focus is on issues that have high severity and impact vs low severity and low impact
    • How long has it been an issue :: If it has been a bug long enough then it won't be fixed

In some cases a bug will never be fixed because people might be relying on it. For example there are known issues in the shell that won't be fixed because programs have coded around them. Making a change now would break existing programs. This is more likely the longer an issue remains unresolved.

I just have to add, for vulnerability and security related issue, if it is confirmed to be an issue, you will get a notification directly from the team. In case, you share the bug in the Feedback Hub app, sometimes you will get a reply from the Windows team like the issue has been fixed.
Microsoft also used to collect idea and bugs in the UserVoice platform where you will received a direct feedback like it has been fixed but Microsoft is moving away from the UserVoice and we have to see what is the replacement.
For sure, product team will read comments and reports but due to high volume they are unable to response to each one of them directly and they will go ahead and fix the more urgent issues first.

Additional remarks: UserVoice (genera feedback: https://windowsserver.uservoice.com/forums/295047-general-feedback) has been migrated to the new website, the new feedback website is as below:

    https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/

For instructions on migration, please refer to the following link:
