No column descriptions in Data Catalog from Azure SQL database

In the archived question 'Unable to view SQL database descriptions from Azure Data Catalog' there was a suggested reply to look at the Q&A which indicated that ms_description should be included for an Azure SQL db.

This doesn't happen, I have the same issue and don't want to re-enter all the description in Data Catalog. The value of the DC is almost zero without it.

It's like it's only looking at the '1st class' attributes which my forward engineering design tool does not populate, it used the extended attribute ms_desciption.

Is there some trick to getting the descriptions loaded or is it just not supported. Could it be a permissions thing? I'm using the same account for the register process as was used to create the database, so I doubt that is the problem.

    Hi @Peter Kempkers ,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum and thanks for posting your query.

As per the official documentation, looks like the property is not supported for Azure SQL database.

Here is the reference doc: Azure Data Catalog frequently asked questions

For updated Data Catalog features, please use the new Azure Purview service (currently in public preview), which offers unified data governance for your entire data estate. Please feel free to try it out and let us know if you have any questions.

    Hope this info helps

Azure Purview shall be able to extract SQL Server extended properties such as MS_Description. I am shocked it doesn't.
