VSS and Carbonite

I have a web server that is being backup using Carbonite Server backup. At random times the backup fails on the VSS initializing step. The only way I can get it to work is to restart the server and restart the job. This gets it working, but it could fail the next day or next week. I have edited my VSS backups from every two hours to twice a day and moved back up to a later hour, but it still happens. I contacted Carbonite and from what they could tell it is a Windows issue, since the backup builds/depends on Windows VSS. Has anyone had this issue before? I'm stumped. I've attached the error message, but it doesn't give any information.
