Recently recivied an email from ******@hotmsil.com saying i had incoming messages on hold due to a server not working, just wondering if its real or not.

Without seeing the actual email it's impossible to provide a 100% definitive answer but it does sound "highly" suspicious. Not aware of any kind of message like this being sent out by MS. My first reaction to this is that it's a phishing scam trying to get your log in credentials.
The true tell-tale sign that this is a fraudulent message is if it's asking you to click on a link inside the message to "update" or "verify" something or other. You can always check to see where any embedded link is actually pointing to by hovring over it or right-clicking on it --> select <Copy> --> paste it in any text editor (NotePad).
