Send as function still working after password change?

I noticed that in my gmail account I've got an email alias set up so that I can send emails appearing to be from my hotmail account from gmail. I must have done this years ago since I didn't remember it and it looks like it's set up with SMTP details and TLS.

I recently changed the password on my hotmail account, and then tried to send an email from gmail using this setup and was surprised to find that it still worked without updating anything and I also couldn't see the emails sent via gmail in my hotmail sent email folder so there would have been no way of me knowing that this had happened if I'd lost access to the gmail account/it was compromised.

Is there any way to turn off this feature/ revoke credentials for external apps?

    Thank you for your response,

It is "only an alias", but it was still concerning that this was still working despite a password change as if someone gained access to my gmail account they would be able to send mail as my hotmail account and I would have no way of revoking this permission.

I am aware that I can remove the alias from my gmail account.

In this case it was fine as I had access to both accounts, but I have reason to believe that one of my other old gmail accounts may have been compromised and I cannot access it as I don't have access to my old phone number. I couldn't remember if I had set this alias up there also and had no way of knowing if emails are being sent as me.

For anyone else interested - I have found a way to revoke this by scrolling back in my outlook emails to 2011 and finding the email that was used to verify that I owned the email address. There was a link in the confirmation email to revoke the permissions.

    Hi,

I understand that you have a concern about you being able to send an email from your Hotmail email account through your Gmail email by using the alias feature of Gmail. Don't worry let me try assist you.

Even though you have change your Hotmail email password, it will still allow you to send an email through your Gmail account because it is only an alias that you're using. According to this Microsoft article as long as it is an email added as an alias, it you can send an email using that alias email address. You can click  here for a detailed explanation about this concern. However, this is a process if your set up as a Hotmail account being our primary email and Gmail account being the alias. Since you have mentioned that it is the other way around a Gmail account using a Hotmail account as an alias, I would recommend contacting Gmail support and check if this is a configuration issue. You can also remove your Hotmail account as an alias to your Gmail email account if you don't wan this feature. If you want to know how you can contact Gmail support for the procedure.

Let us know if you other concerns.

    Bob
