How do I setup a custom email address domain using a domain that is registered with a registrar other than GoDaddy? This should be a really simple process of some custom MX and TXT records added to a domain listing.

Short answer is that you can't. Using a Personalized email address with a <Premium> Outlook.com account (part of MS 365) requires the use of a domain registered with GoDaddy in order to send/receive emails via an Outlook.com account. Your only option is to move the domain to GoDaddy as the registrar for the domain.

Am sure this isn't the answer you're looking for but it's the only one that applies to the question asked. Can't provide a solution that doesn't exist. If one did, rest assured that I would have provided it.

Awfully short-sighted of Microsoft. I will just set it up with Apple instead

Just for the sake of completeness, you can use a domain not registered with GoDaddy with a hosted Exchange account

    Exchange Online (Plan 1)

*** Microsoft 365 in the following article applies to having a business/enterprise plan that included a hosted Exchange account which includes the above plan. Just doesn't apply to a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.

Add a domain to Microsoft 365
