Credentials needed for Gmail Outlook

So I got one of those emails that require my password, so I in a dumb way gave them my password. Perhaps it was legit because it disappeared as soon as I entered it. I heard that it was a phishing scam but I do not know as it lead to what seemed like an offical site for Microsoft. If it is truly bad then what can I do to avoid the bad reactions?
