I have gmail connected to outlook via imap. The error message "The message store has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this message store, select some items that you no longer need, and permanently delete them." When I try to delete, the same error message pops up. I also received the error message "The Outlook data file (file location).ost has reached the maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this file, permanently delete some items that you no longer need." Again, cannot delete anything, get the same message. Can I simply delete the .ost file? Assume because it is a gmail account, the files will be saved in gmail?

    Hi Megan Freckelton

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community forum. I hope you're doing well.

Based on your description, it seems to be that you have a problem with your Gmail on Outlook app wherein you are getting an error message that it reached its maximum size. Let's work together to find the best solution to this problem.

I would like to ask some questions to better understand the problem.

    • Can you provide us a screenshot of the exact error message?
    • How many email addresses you have on the Outlook mail app?
    • What is the version or product name of Outlook you are using? Is it Microsoft 365 Family/Personal or Business? You may refer to this link here for instructions. About Office: What version of Office am I using? - Microsoft Support

To further isolate the problem, I suggest that you check your email on its webmail(Gmail.com) and see if it has the same problem on the web. Might as well check the mailbox storage of your Gmail account on the web. Please note that Outlook app is an email client and it will only depend on the email server of your email.

I look forward to your reply.

    Sincerely
