Good day
SQL servers on my account are extremely slow, this seems to be regardless of the databases I deploy to them. I have tried EU and US servers. I am currently in South Africa. All my peers face the same issue connecting to the servers. While using SSMS, even loading a context menu when right clicking on a database is slow. The initial database I created was about 50 empty tables, I have also tried deploying Microsoft's Northwind database to no avail.
I have tried Azure's automatic optimisation, this made no difference.

As other mentioned, please check your network performance. It is related to the speed of responses across the network (latency) or to the capacity of the network (bandwidth) connecting your SSMS to the database. i.e. how much data it can transmit in a set time.
Slow internet connection and/or high latency to the remote data center
And of course, if you are South Africa, but EU and US data centres are at quite some distance, and the speed of light will start to be noticeable if you have something that is chatty. (SSMS is not extremely chatty, but most operations needs a couple of queries forth and back.)
Which service level to you have on your databases?
