"set up a new cell phone number" what kind of advice is this? That shouldn't even be considered a solution, who goes around picking up new phone numbers whenever they want, no one does.

The problem is still in how MS deals with accounts: Whatever you have set up in the "Ways to prove who you are" is mutually exclusive to what you select in the MFA setup.

So as abtruse as MS is, you have to remove or replace what you have in the "Ways to prove who you are" section to be able to use that option (phone, email) in the MFA setup.

Why do I need MFA if there are already 3 other things setup in Ways to prove who you are?

Why arent those options able to be combined?

    Dear toake123

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, I know you problem more clearer

Have you set your cell phone number as an alias? Like you can log into your Microsoft account with your own cell phone number?

And you have set your cell phone number as the verification information?

I must emphasize that using two-step verification on a cell phone, a mobile verifier is a better option. For the problem you are facing now, either set up a new cell phone number as the secret message or unset the cell phone number as an alias.

If you have any questions, please contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

    Thanks Kokutou -

I have a phone number already linked to my account, but when I go and try to enable 2fa with my phone number it says "This is already part of your security info." and doesn't let me set it up.

I don't want to have to install an app for this and was hoping to be able to get 2FA through my phone but it won't let me.
