If I start a new email does not open in a separate window making it impossible to drag and drop other messages from my inbox into my new email.

    Hi Sheri,

You may have already figured this out, but posting something that may help just in case. I am using the Desktop version of Outlook 365 (although this may also work on the web-based version). Try these steps:

    Open Outlook

Click on Settings (cog in the upper right corner- note that I am using the new version of Outlook)

    Select 'Mail'

    Select 'Compose and Reply'

Under Pop-Out Settings select 'pop-out to a new window'

Click Save (you may need to restart Outlook)

Hopefully this works for you. The default was 'Write inline' for me, and I realized that when the message wasn't in a separate window I could not right-click and get the same commands as in the previous version of Outlook (such as cut/copy/paste and suggested spellings which I use all the time when spellcheck doesn't autocorrect misspelled words).

Thanks, that is all very well but can I set it up so that it starts all new emails in a new window or do I need to click that button every time?

How do we make new messages open in a separate window automatically without having to click the new window icon? I wish to compose new messages in a new window by clicking the "New Email" button and not have to click something else. We have been able to do this in the past, so it should be available as a setting now. Thank you.

It appears Microsoft removed the ability to the ability to set as default a pop-out window for new messages and replies in favor of adding tabs at the bottom: a POOR DECISION. Microsoft: users do not want tabs, we need to be able to refer to other messages while composing mail or responses. Please restore this feature!!!

    Jessamyn,

Yes, I was able to access settings as you directed; however, the setting is not there. It is not there for my personal (Paid) Office 365 account nor my work (Exchange) Office 365 account. I'm not sure what is going on here, but it is frustrating and needs to be fixed by Microsoft for sure. I do appreciate your efforts! I just think it is silly that a company with the resources like Microsoft 1. has issues such as these, and 2. is so completely blind to the problem as to necessitate a "community forum." If the product worked correctly the community forum would not be necessary.
