Why do I get this notification.

Hi,

I am using Outlook 2019.

When I have signed in I immediately get this notification.

Internet Email- then my email address X

Enter your user name and password for the following server.

Server pop-mail.outlook.com

User Name then my email address

Password *********

Save this password in your password list (the box is ticked)

OK (surrounded by a blue box ) Cancel

Whatever I click on the X at the top the OK button or the Cancel button the notification disappears then comes back.

I am also informed that there was an error receiving emails from my hotmail account.

I use a different password for accessing Outlook 2019 to the password I use for accessing my hotmail account.

I assume the password referred to in the above notification is the one I use for my hotmail account.

Why do I get this message and how do I stop it appearing again.

Regards Paddy

Hi, I'm Diane and I'm happy to help you today.

That is not the correct server name for outlook.com pop access. Adding the account as an Exchange is recommended. If you want or need to use pop, the pop (and imap) settings are in the article - https://support.microsoft.com/office/pop-imap-and-smtp-settings-for-outlook-com-d088b986-291d-42b8-9564-9c414e2aa040

Is Outlook opened? If so, go to Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings. On the Email accounts tab, delete the outlook.com pop account. If you oultook.com email, click Add account and add it back - auto account set up will add it back as an exchange account.

If Outlook won't open (it should - click Cancel on the dialog a couple of times or so) - open Control panel, find Mail (Microsoft Outlook) - then click Email accounts button and edit or delete the outlook.com account.

Let me know how it goes, I'm here to help you further if needed.

-- Diane

    Hi Diane,

I had by Outlook 2019 changed from pop/imap to Exchange by a local expert as this problem became permanent rather than intermittent.

I could not trust my little knowledge of computer tech to do it correctly.

I am now getting the message at the bottom of the Outlook page that says trying to connect, and at the top it says Outlook is not responding. This is again intermittent sometimes it will last for an hour or two before I can use Outlook properly sometimes shorter. Other times I have no problem at all.

Any ideas as to what is happening here.

    Paddy

    Hi Diane,

As stated above I did not do anything. I have just opened outlook and the problem seems to have gone.

    A mystery.

    Thank you for your advice.

    Hi Diane,

    Thank you for your reply.

At the moment I have not done anything as I would like to know why this has suddenly started to happen as I have not changed any of my setting since I first used Outlook with Outlook 2007 and then upgraded to Outlook 2019, 18 months ago. As far as I am aware that server pop-mail.outlook.com has been there all that time.

I do not use Office365. I do have my mobile phone linked to my hotmail.com email address. If I was to delete emails on my phone it will delete emails from my hotmail account so I don't do this. If I delete emails on my PC in Outlook 2019 it does not delete them from my hotmail account. I have it this way so that I don't loose any emails before I have read them. I can double check by going into my hotmail account.
