Moving emails from inbox to specific folder

I have a question about moving emails from the inbox to another folder. When I move the email to a specific folder using the "move" method, the original remains in the inbox. I don't want that to happen.

Then, if I delete the message in the specific folder where I moved it, then the original email is also deleted from the inbox.

I want the email to move from the inbox and be safe in the new folder so I won't lose it.

Thanks

I responded to Diane's first reply to my initial inquiry, but have not received a response to my follow-up answering her questions.

I am using Microsoft 365 subscription that renews yearly. Outlook is part of that as you know. That is what I am using.

Here are the steps I am pursuing and the result I don't want:

I am having issues with moving outlook emails from the inbox to another folder. When I do so, the original email continues to reside in the inbox as well as the destination folder. But, if I delete the original email in the inbox, it also disapppears from the folder where I want to save it. Keep in mind that when I originally moved the email, I selected the "move" option on the ribbon at the top of the outlook email page. So, I attempted to move it, not just copy it.

I am using IMAP; keep in mind that my account is set up with Exchange, which I don't fully understand as a friend that knows Windows helped me get this setup several years ago.

I don't know what you mean by the new Outlook app. As described above, I am simply using my subscription version of outlook.

No, I am not moving messages to a folder in a different account. I am moving the messages from my primary inbox to a folder listed under that inbox.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi

I'm Diane and I'm happy to help you today.

This is happening in classic Outlook for Windows? Do the messages move if you drag them to the folder?

What type of account are you using? POP, IMAP, Outlook.com or Microsoft 365?

If you are using new Outlook app, are you moving the messages to the folders in a different account? If so, the behavior is expected.

Let me know how it goes, I'm here to help you further if needed.
