While it seems clear Microsoft has its head up the clouds so far that it may never see us little people back down here on planet Earth (you know, us on-prem guys that MS no longer cares about), I was wondering - and perhaps having hope against all hope----

Has there been any mention of the next version of SQL Server? SQL Server 2022, perhaps?

Nothing as yet, but the normal cadence is usually every couple of years. Be assured that Microsoft hasn't forgotten on-premises (and of course VM-based) SQL Server users - I'm sure the license sales there count just as much as subscriptions in Azure :-)

I'm sure you will see a flurry of activity when the early beta versions get dropped and are available for testing.
