Opening links in new outlook in the default app not browser

HI, I have started using New Outlook and every time I receive an email with a SharePoint document link, by default it opens the document or file in the browser. There was a setting in the old Outlook to automatically allow the opening in the desktop app. How do you do this in New Outlook?

I would strongly suggest that Microsoft is working like a customer, and not like a developer. Powerpoint in Browser just does not work and is not usable. Same for MS Teams. Not sure who came up with this idea, but definitely not a pro-user. Same for Excel.

New Outlook is useless if it tries to force people into the browser, by then enforcing Excel / Powerpoint to work in the Browser.

So please change this if this product should be Enterprise ready, otherwise it is only good for private use, but not for Enterprise use.

Hi, making that change did not seem to make any change in terms of where the file opened. They still seem to open in the browser.

I don't see the option to open links in the desktop app either within my settings or in the screenshot you provided.

Can you please provide some more information please?

    Hi Butler Keith,

    Good day.

After deeper research we have found that this feature is not avilable in New Outlook Open file links directly in Microsoft 365 desktop apps from Teams and classic Outlook , as a workaround you can only preview the links as shown in our previous update.

The New Outlook for windows till now this feature does not available in new Outlook , the new Outlook lacks this feature, thank you for trying New Outlook for Windows and bringing this to our attention, your concern is very meaningful and reasonable. Hi Butler Keith,

    Good day.

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Community. We are glad to assist.

I understand how that can be a bit frustrating. In the New Outlook, the process to open links in the desktop app instead of the browser is slightly different. Here’s how you can set it up:

    1. Open Outlook and go to the Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner.
    2. Select View all Outlook settings at the bottom.
    3. Navigate to Mail > Compose and reply.
    4. Scroll down to the Link Previewsection.
    5. Here, you can choose to open links in the desktop app instead of the browser.

This should help ensure that links open in the desktop app rather than the browser. Let me know if this works for you or if you need further assistance.

I hope this helps let me know if this is contrary to what you need, I would still be helpful to answer more of your questions.

    Best Regards,
