consistent timeout when accessing some websites

The following occurs on a PC running the latest version of Windows and Office 365: Since a few weeks ago, I can no longer access a range of websites due to timeouts. Problem-solving attempts so far:

  • The problem is not related to those sites (e.g., NY Times or Duckduckgo) or to my router as I can access then from other computers using the same router.
  • The problem also affects running some software that checks via web whether I have an appropriate license each time it starts.
  • The problem occurs independent of browser being used (MS Edge, Chrome, Firefox).
  • I have tried emptying cache, but that did not improve the situation.
Any ideas what the problem is and how it can be solved?
