Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
Hi Steve Atwood,
Thank you for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.
I realise that you have chosen to close your email account, but there is a 60-day waiting period for this process, and I am acutely aware that this situation is troubling to you, and I will do everything I can to help you!
Normally, if you want to close your account.
- Sign in to your Microsoft personal account.
- If you are prompted to sign in and/or verify your account, follow the instructions.
- Check that the Microsoft account shown on the page is correct, then click Next.
- Read the list and click the checkboxes to confirm that you have read each item.
- Choose to set the window to reopen to 30 or 60 days.
- In the Select reason drop-down list, select the reason statement for closing the account.
- Click Mark Account as Closed.
If you feel that the 60 day wait is just too long for you, you can log back into it and set the window to reopen your account to 30 days. I need to explain to you that the reason for setting a 30 or 60 day waiting period is because once your account is closed, it will completely delete your data and content, this action is not reversible, so it gives the user a buffer period of time in case you need to use the account again.

I understand what you're saying about the account possibly being all over the dark web, so if your account or emails contain some bank card numbers or other private information about you, you can go to your local bank and freeze the card or report it to the relevant organisations to prevent your money from being lost. There are also other ways you can alert your usual contacts, such as family members friends and colleagues, to tell them about your situation, and if they have recently received some spam or phishing emails, don't click on any unusual links in the emails or transfer money to unfamiliar card numbers.
If you have any other account questions, you can contact online customer service, which is a much more timely way to get a response from a live person.
- Open the site: Contact - Microsoft Support
- In the box under "We're Here to Help," enter MSA, click "Get Directions," and then click "Contact Customer Service." (You must be signed in to your Microsoft account. If not, follow step 3.)
- In this section, you need to sign in to your personal Microsoft account.
Note: You can only sign in with your personal MSA, the correct content will not be displayed when you sign in with your company account. If the account cannot be connected, you can use a different account or create a new account to run it;
- Under Products & Services, select "Other Products," select "Manage Account Security," and then click Confirm.
- You can select "Chat with a support specialist in web browser" and enter the chat window.
Please contact customer service during your office hours.
Thank you for your patience and support
Best Regards
