Hello. I am receiving both SMTP authentication and email server error messages when attempting to send a scan from my Epson printer to my msn.com email address. I contacted Epson and their technical service team reviewed the error messages and noted that this issue needs to be resolved through the email service provider. Everything was working fine for 15 months and now we are unable to send scans to email.
The error message is:
SMTP server authentication error. Check the following:
We have a MAC using OS 10.13.6

Hi puckluck20,
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
Are you connecting your Microsoft domain account in Epson and getting an authentication error?
This is a known issue. The core reason is the use of modern authentication (an update to meet industry security standards), requiring updated verification for connecting email in non-Microsoft applications.
Ensure your Epson supports the new modern authentication for IMAP/POP/Outlook.com. Verify that your Epson software is updated and confirm with Epson support about modern authentication issues.
You can also refer to the instructions in the provided image.

The same issue occurred for me, where it suddenly stopped working and was a result of Microsoft ending support for Basic Auth in late september/early october and now requiring any client that is syncing to your email to use Modern Auth/OAuth. There was a warning email sent by Microsoft in September.
I've had no luck with finding a solution for the scan to email server authentication problem if using a microsoft account, however I have managed to get the scan to email function to work with a gmail account.
To do this you need to use an App Password rather than your regular Gmail password when setting up the server settings. If you have a gmail account, this guide explains how to set up the App Passwords for Gmail:

Whilst App Passwords can be created with microsoft accounts they don't seem to work with Epson printers - I have no idea why, and it is not clear whether this is a microsoft fault or an Epson one.
