Can I disable the junk filter?

I'm using a free Outlook email address using my personal Microsoft account.

I've been using it for more than 10 years, and I have to admit, I'm getting tired of having some legit mail getting automatically filtered as spam. I have the junk email settings set as "standard" but I'm wondering if I can disable it fully.

I've also used third party mail clients over the years (like Thunderbird, Mailspring, MacOS native Mail client) and the junk folder always shows empty there, even when there actually was some content inside when I use the official Outlook client. I barely get any real spamming emails, and afaik I've always been able to detect it by myself, so I just want to bypass the integrated Outlook junk filter, which has not been working properly for me since the beginning. Is there a way to simply disable the standard filter?

Thanks.

I am sorry to hear about the frustration you are experiencing with the Outlook.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Outlook does not provide a direct option to completely disable the junk email filter for free Outlook.com accounts (or personal Microsoft accounts). The junk email filter is an integrated feature designed to protect users from spam and phishing attempts, and Microsoft enforces some level of filtering on the server side, even if you adjust settings or use third-party email clients. However, there are ways to minimize its impact and ensure that legitimate emails are less likely to be filtered into the Junk folder.

Solution : Adjust Junk Email Settings to "No Automatic Filtering"

While you can't fully disable the junk filter, you can set it to the least intrusive option, which is "No automatic filtering." This setting tells Outlook not to automatically move emails to the Junk folder based on its algorithms, though some server-side filtering for obvious spam or phishing (determined by Microsoft) may still occur. Here's how to do it:

    Access Junk Email Options:

Log in to your Outlook.com account via a web browser.

Click on the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner.

Select "View all Outlook settings" at the bottom of the settings pane.

Navigate to Mail > Junk email.

    Set to No Automatic Filtering:

Under the "Filters" section, select the option "No automatic filtering. Mail from blocked senders is still moved to the Junk Email folder."

This ensures that Outlook does not proactively filter emails into Junk based on its standard algorithms, except for emails from senders you've explicitly blocked.

    Manage Safe Senders and Domains:

In the same "Junk email" settings page, under Safe senders and domains, add email addresses or domains of contacts whose emails often get marked as junk. This tells Outlook to always allow emails from these sources to go to your Inbox.

Similarly, under Safe mailing lists, add any mailing list addresses you subscribe to.

Check the box for "Trust email from my contacts" if you want emails from your saved contacts to bypass filtering.

    Save Changes:

Click "Save" to apply the new settings. Please let me know if these solutions work otherwise, I would be happy to assist further.
