Howdy All! Some background on this issue.

We have recently been going through a migration to O365 Business Premium. At present we are running a hybrid configuration of Exchange 2016 on-prem and O365 Exchange Online using AzureAD Sync to keep things matching and synced between the two locations.

During the migration, one of the mailboxes we were migrating got damaged and as such we need to create a new mailbox for the user and link the new mailbox to the users existing user account.

My question is, how do I remove the link from the users existing mailbox and AD account, and then link the existing AD account to the new mailbox please?

Any help is appreciated!

You cannot create a mailbox without AD account. An user mailbox is composed with an Exchange mailbox and related AD account.

You can try to disable this mailbox from Exchange on-premises. Then assign license to this AAD account, it will enable a new Exchange online mailbox for this AAD account.
