Windows Server 2012 stopped receiving WSUS updates recently

Hope someone can help me with this issue.

Recently some of our Windows Server 2012 VMs has stopped getting updates from our WSUS with error 8024401F and I can't figure out what is causing it. One thing i notice is that the non working server recently installed update Kb5001401 and ever since then it has failed to update. Have tried resetting all windows update related services, reregistering dlls, recreating the SoftwareDownload folder to no avail.
All other Windows client workstations and Server appear to be working and getting updates from our WSUS.

@Rita Hu -MSFT , Thank you for your answer. I have check all settings in the IIS side of things and everything appears correct.
I ended up removing the WSUS role and reinstalling it. following the guide here:

And this seems to have fixed the issues with our servers getting updates.

@Adam J. Marshall , I followed your guide but came to a stop after I deleted deleted the WID database files (SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB_log.ldf) and tried to reinstall the WSUS role and WID. It told me that I couldn't install WID on the same server. I noticed that the WID service was still running so I stopped it and tried again but still came up wit the same error. I also tried stopping the service and renaming\moving the WID folder but still the WID role refused to install again.
I finally recovered the two database files I had deleted, installed the WSUS role alone and then ran the WSUS post install tasks successfully with the old database and everything worked as it should.
Have you ever come across this issue with the WID refusing to install after removing the WSUS and WID role from the Server Manager GUI?

Uninstalling WID and wiping out the C:\Windows\WID folder would have been the step you missed. the WID folder contains the master.mdf that keeps track of all attached databases. If you just removed the SUSDB database files, the records are still in the master database of SQL - so re-installing WSUS can create troubles because of the references still in the master database.

Ah yes, I did miss that point, my bad.
Interestingly even though I stopped the WID service and removed the folder the server still though that I had it installed.

I think where I went wrong is that I removed the WSUS role and WID from the GUI and this did not remove the WID completely or cleanly.

I had to, remove the WSUS role by itself first, then delete the WID by running the PowerShell command and then delete the r3esidual folder and files.

It is possible that the is a bug doing it the GUI way in Server 2012 or something just didn't go right for me.

In any case all is up and running with the old database anyhow. what ever issue i had with accessing the uident.cab file has gone away and server and pcs that weren't getting updates are now working. Thanks for your help.

Actually, I did come across one issue after the rebuild. I found that the last few Win server 2008 Rs server were not getting update any longer.
Eventually through the logs i found the issus and the solution here:

For some reason the Win7SP1 folder isn't created after a fresh install. I created the folder and added the WSUS3Setup.cab in there, and the servers picked up the updates.

Hope that helps anybody that has the same issue.

Thanks for your posting on Q&A.

Did the issue occur on any other computers? Could we try to follow the below step first to confirm the connection between the WSUS server or the Windows Server 2012 Servers:
Open IE browser on one of the non working server and post the below link as your environment:

http://WSUS server's name:8530/selfupdate/iuident.cab

You will receive a package with the .cab if the connection is OK.

Please let me know if there are any updates of the case.

Thanks for your answers.
I ran similar commands to recreate the Softwaredownload folder and reregister associated dlls. I ran the commands as suggested on the affected servers, and they pick up that there is available updates to install but as soon as you try to install you get the error 8024401F.
Checking the iuident.cab returns a 500 error, this also happens on pcs and servers that are not affected. I checked the WSUS IIS and can see that the virtual folder is available and seems to be properly set up as the event viewer in the WSUS server shows 12072 and 13042 error events which seem to suggest a problem with the wsus server.
However most servers and windows 10 desktops are getting updates ok so I'm not too sure what is happening. The only servers that seem to bee having issues are Windows server 2012.

Have you tried to configure the IIS before? If not, could we follow this link first to configure the IIS first. Then we could try to download the required updates on the Windows Server 2012 servers.
