Hi Tom,
Good day! Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Support Community.
You've asked how to disable the problematic autocomplete behavior in Outlook when inserting a hyperlink using Ctrl+K. Specifically, you're seeing Outlook unpredictably append extra text to the end of your pasted URL in the "Insert Hyperlink" dialog, which alters the intended link.
Microsoft does not currently offer a direct setting to disable autocomplete behavior specifically within the Ctrl+K hyperlink dialog. However, there are a few workarounds and related settings that may help:
- Turn Off Automatic Hyperlinks Globally
You can disable automatic hyperlink formatting in Outlook:
- Go to File > Options > Mail > Editor Options > Proofing
- Click AutoCorrect Options
- Under the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab, uncheck “Internet and network paths with hyperlinks”
This stops Outlook from automatically converting typed URLs into hyperlinks, but it may not affect the Ctrl+K behavior directly.
- Undo Autocomplete Immediately
If Outlook appends unwanted text, pressing Ctrl+Z right after pasting can undo the autocomplete.
- Use Plain Text Mode Temporarily
Switching the email format to Plain Text before inserting the hyperlink may prevent Outlook from applying formatting or autocomplete logic. You can switch back to HTML afterward.
- Insert Hyperlink via Right-Click Instead of Ctrl+K
Some users report more predictable behavior when using right-click > Link > Insert Link rather than Ctrl+K.
I hope my information helps you. Please feel free to contact us again if something doesn't go right or if you need further assistance.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Warm Regards,
Kristen - L - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist.
