Superscript/subscript in subscript?

since there are so many knowledgeable people here I thought I'd ask.

I want to write, WITHOUT using the equation editor (I need to copy content between excel and word often, and that just doesn't work), for example

xH2O

where H2O is in subscript, but 2 is a subscript of the subscript. I can fake it by making the font smaller, but as soon as a paste special "without format", or reformat the style, this will vanish. Also, it is not a true subscript below the line.

or nx2

where x2 is subscript, but the 2 is a superscript.

ANSWER:

I just found it, I can use character codes 2070 to 208C. thought I'd post it anyways, for others to use.

What are the special characters for subscript/subscript letters?

    I.e. 2090 - 2096 are a, e, o, x and the inverted e in subscript / subscript.

I am specifically looking for h, k, and l, but it would be nice to have a full list of these characters somewhere.

    Any idea ?

    thank you.

They don't exist. The letters a, e, o, x are the only ones available AFAIK. Subscripts and superscripts are defined in the range U+2070 to U+209F and some remnants in U+00Bx. Those remnants (1,2,3) exist because of historic reasons.

Ooooh, interesting to see they are not consequtively numbered for the 1,2,3. thanks for the follow up post.

    thx.

Haven't found any such characters for letters, yet...

Whether or not you can insert the superscripted characters depends on whether the current font actually contains the characters. In the case of the superscripted 2 and 3 these characters are available in Word 2007's insert special characters in the extended character sets of the default fonts shortcut by pressing ALT + 0178 ² and ALT+179 ³ on the numeric keypad. There's also a superscripted 1 at ALT+0185 ¹

There may be mathematical font sets that have more such characters, but that would only be of use for yourself, unless you were distributing printed material.

Oh, and if you look for the superscript 2, or 3 which are not present in the office 2007 insert special character list, even if I enter the character code they should be 2071, 2072, 2073), switch the keyboard layout to German, and press the RIGHT alt key (aka alt-gr) plus "2" or right alt key+2, they place these characters.

Are there any such options for all the letters?

e.g. Xyz, where yz is a subscript, and z a superscript in the subscript? thx.
