Error msg - invalid character - received when trying to run a macro

I am using Word 2010 for the first time. I was able to successfully create and run macros in '07 but when I follow the steps (correctly I've checked and rechecked my steps) macros in 2010 I receive an error message when I attempt to run it. I am able to create the macros. It's only when running one that I have problems. I receive an error message: "Compile Error: Invalid Character" EVERY time. This is in the form of a littlel box that comes up against a page of Visual basic. I have found that if I delete everything on the visual basic page (all of the commands relating to the macro) I am able to exit back into the Word doc, create a macro and run it. But when I close the doc and open a new one (which I have to do 30+ times a day) the old macros are back and I run into the same error. Please help! What did I do wrong??

Start with posting whatever code you have that seems to make the error.  It sound slike you have a bad chunk of code in your normal file.

Alternatively, delete (rename it) your normal, and let Word make a new one.
