I was creating a union query and my code was wrong and Access froze. so I restarted- application-computer-everything and my external harddiver is in the same USB it was before -

The Backend file opens fine - but the front end file - when I go to Login to get into from within access gives me a Visual Basic RunTime Error 3044

any way I can fix this if I can't even open it???

thanks,

bkel

Hold down Shift key while you open the front end.

One thing to note.  USB drives don't always get assigned the same drive letter depending on what you have connected to your computer at the time.  So, if you want it on a never changing drive letter -

    1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Open Administrative Settings
    3. Open Computer Management
    4. Select DISK MANAGEMENT from under the Storage category on the left side.
    5. Right click on the USB Drive name in the list and select CHANGE DRIVE LETTER AND PATHS.
    6. Select CHANGE
    7. Select the Drive Letter you want it to be (I would suggest one a little higher up like G or H just so it doesn't conflict with optical drives and such.

Then whenever you connect this device back up to this computer (or reboot) it will stay at the drive letter you chose and then your path to the database backend will not be messed up.

If your application was on a USB drive (memory stick), there is a good chance that it is corrupted.

Do you have a backup?  That may be the only way you can recover.

Make a copy of what you have and then try doing a compact and repair.

    Open ACCESS

    Click on the Office Button

    Click Manage

    Click and Repair database

Navigate to the Copy and select it and let Access try to fix the problem

I tried this and no success.  My error is a path name error where it thinks its retrieving the file from my network drive.  the file is on my thumb drive.  I loaded other Access files to my thumb drive with no problem.  You think its something in this specific database file?  I did go into the file on the network drive and saved as "E:(file name".  Any help is appreciated.  When I click the help box in the error message it has error code 3044 "Path is not a valid path"
