I have a brand new laptop and office recently installed (windows 7). Everything is fine except when I sort in Excel, Excel crashes and windows 7 creates a recovered version. This is a real pain at I need to sort many times a day. Can anyone help please. Thanks

Actually - after some more research I found another post that recommended a File-SaveAs to XLSX format.  My workbook was still XLS.  This worked for me.

    Hi everyone,

    I am using Office 2013.

In my particular case, I have narrowed the "crash on sort" down to this:

    • Some rows are grouped
    • Filtering as been applied to one of the columns

Note that BOTH grouping and filtering need to have been applied.  If either isn't there, i.e. I either ungroup all the rows, OR none of the columns have filtering, then sorting works perfectly.

I have an extremely simple test file (8 columns, 11 rows) .  It has no macros.  But with the above criteria, the crash is 100%.

I have tried disabling add-ins.  I have tried the registry trick.  I have tried turning filtering on and off in the headers.  No go.

Is this a known issue?  Is Microsoft aware?  Is there a workaround?

I have never tried to interact directly with support.  I'd love to send my test file to someone, but I'm not sure how to go about that in a way that someone at MS will take notice.

    Suggestions, anyone?

    Thanks!

This works for me...  I select the first cell in my header, turn off the filter and then right back on. (two clicks on the ribbon filter icon)  This can be done in VBA of course too if you're populating tables using code.  Just reset the filter at the end.  Works for me on XLSM and XLSB version 2010.

Deleting the registry setting sorted my issue with sorting

    Run > regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > OFFICE > 14.0

Right click Excel and rename it to Excel.old then exit and reopen Excel
