Can't decrease top or bottom margins

I have Windows 7 and using Word 7.  When I try to decrease top or bottom margins to less than 1" or the side margins to less than 1.25", I get the error message that says "Settings you chose .....are too large for page width".  It then gives lots of possible reasons but no advice on how to remedy any of them.  I cannot get the option to "fix" or to "ignore" that the "Help" page says I should be able to get when I exceed printer capablity.  I am stuck with the default margins.  My printer is Brother MFC-7840W.  It will easily print with wider margins as evidenced when I use an inserted graphic and blow it up using "tight" format.  Brother says this error message is not a printer driver problem nor is related to printer settings.  They said it a problem in Word that is not allowing the change.  Also, in landscape format the right margin is more than two inches on the page even though the layout says it should be 1 inch.  This also cannot be changed without getting the error message.  Please help.  Thanks.

On the Page Layout tab, click Columns, then More Columns... Select the preset picture for One (even if 1 column is already selected) and click OK.

If this is just a problem with a single document, and this fixes it, then you're home free. If this is a problem with all documents (and this fixes it), then you'll need to make the change in Normal.dotm (though I think it unlikely that this could be a problem affecting Word 2007--it's more likely to crop up in a legacy document).

Thank you so much, Suzanne.  Your solution worked perfectly.  I did indeed have to change the Normal.dotm so very appreciate your anticipating that possibility.  I am now set and can't believe I waited so long to ask your assistance.  An earlier request would have saved lots of frustration.  Thanks again!
