I recently purchased a Mac which had Office pre-installed as a trial.  I used it for the 60 days and then decided not to sign up for it online, but to go out and buy a new version of it in the box.  I was told to uninstall the trial version and install the new version fresh.  I uninstalled it and rebooted the Mac.  Now when I try to install the new Office I get a message which continually pops up on my screen saying "You must quit the following applications before continuing: syncservicesagent.  There appears to be no way to quit this application and as a result I am unable to complete the installation of the new Office.

I hate to tell you but you can use a CD key from a retail copy on the trial.

Your best option is to Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. When you Log in, hold down the Shift key. This disables all startup items including Sync Services agent.

Install Office 2011

Tips for a successful install

  1. Quit all applications before running the Office installer. Easy Way: Under the Apple in the Menu bar, select Log out. When you Log in, hold down the Shift key. This will disable all Login items including the hidden ones.
  2. The Office Installer replaces old Office fonts with new fonts. If any open application is using a font that is replaced by the Office Installer, that application could become unstable or display information incorrectly. See Font Management for  help
  3. It’s advised to install the entire suite. You save very little space if you don’t install an Application and it could cause future updates to fail. You can select not to install languages. This is the preferred way rather than try removing after the install with a third party application like Monolingual.
  4. Restart after install and between each update.
  5. Updates are important. They contain bug fixes and security updates. Under Help in the Menu bar select “Check for Updates”. I suggest check automatically. This way you will receive a notification whenever a new update is released. It does not install the update, it just notifies you.
  6. Before updating either archive (zip) the Microsoft Office folder in Applications or have a backup on Time Machine or other backup drive. If the update has problems, you can easily revert to the archived copy. Updates do not include an uninstall feature. If you have a failed update and do not have a backup, to restore your applications to its original state you would need to delete it from your hard disk, reinstall Office from your original installation disk, and then install ALL updates.
  7. Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility after installing.
  8. Remember it’s easier to do it right than have to troubleshoot because you tried to use shortcuts to install.
  9. If you have an eSATA drive, read this Microsoft KB before installing. IMPORTANT

  • Select the MAU in the Dock and download the updater.
