When working in Word 2010, I open a blank document, i then create my document, but as I need functions on the Home Tab, I click the home tab let's say I need underscoring I use the function but it bounces back to the file tab. Everytime I want to format the doc, I have to keep clicking on the Home Tab. Can you lock them in place until you use another tab?

If it’s the ribbon that you can’t view when you move to another tab hit the Ctrl key + F1 key to bring the ribbon back into view.
