Microsoft Excel 2010: General mail failure. Quit Microsoft Excel, restart the mail system, and try again

Hi.

I just installed Microsoft Excel 2010. I am also running Windows 7 Professional x64.

I am not able to send e-mail from within Excel. When I click on the Filetab,Save & Send, then Send Using E-mail, and thenSend Using E-mail, I get an intimidating error that says "General mail failure. Quit Microsoft Excel, restart the mail system, and try again". I know I have Microsoft Outlook 2010 installed and is set as the default e-mail program. I also have IE 8.0.

How do I fix it this problem? I tried looking for a solution on the internet, but I'm not getting any real solution to my problem, or people have posted misleading or confusing instructions. Microsoft's knowledge base was not helpful.

Sincerely,

Rupertsland, Canada

    Helllo,

I got the same Problem in windows 7,

I tried to search in several forums and at last i found the procedure.

    Go to Control Panel,

    Click on Program and Features,

Then Click on Microsoft Office 2007,

the Click on Change and Repair.

    Then wait for completion.

Once it is completed and then restart the computer.

    Problem Solved.

    Hello,

Even though this thread is over 7 years old. I had the same issue with MS Office 2010 and Windows 10. I ran the repair option from the Office 2010 install software and it took care of the issue.

Thanks for this.  I'm using 64bit versions of everything: Win8.1 MS Office 2013.  I had the same problem with Outlook only sending attachments from Excel from within Outlook; couldn't send from Excel unless Outlook wasn't open.

    Your fix worked 100%

    Nothing to do with Java.

Our problem with this was Excel and Outlook being open at the same time.  We would shut Outlook down and then try to mail from Excel again and it worked fine for us.  Hopefully this helps.

EDIT: I actually found a registry key that can cause this.  Check for

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\MSMapiApps\

See if this key is present and rename it:  EMSMDB32.DLL

If that doesn't work, try renaming the entire MSMapiApps Hive and see what your results are.

Reminder:  Just make sure Outlook is closed before you mod the registry key.  Good Luck.
