After monkeying with the service packs for Expression Web 4 I finally got Service Pack 1 to successfully install and it was pretty simple to accomplish:

  1. I copied the contents of the installation media, for Expression Studio, to the root of my hard drive's second partition.
  2. Then I downloaded the service pack executable and copied to the root of this partition as well and ran the executable.

It installed successfully and then I was able to successfully install Service Pack 2 via Windows Update.  I would imagine that as long as the contents of the installation media and the service pack executable are all at least in one folder things the installation will be successful.

Thanks for the tip.  I do have the file on my desktop.  Process tried:

    a. get all updates using Microsoft Update. All installed, incl. SP1 for Win7.

    b.  tried to download / run from Expression Web page... it failed.

    c.  downloaded to desktop; closed all apps; ran, and it failed.

    d. booted in safe mode: no apps running: ran, and it failed.

PS:  a week ago the OS was re-installed, to cure other errors.  I still cannot run backup and restore (restore works, but cannot change backup settings).

    Agree on system restore...

    Other ideas welcome.

I don't know if it would improve the issue but it may

be worth a try to download the complete file to a

folder on your hard drive before installing.

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System

Restore point before installing software or updates)
