adding numbers contained in different cells

in the past I was able to add numbers with no problem using the formula " =sum(s24,p27) " it would add the numbers in both cells and give the answer, the total. now all that happens is it shows the function as I typed it. I went to the help menu and followed the instructions, =sun(s26:s36) to get a total of the ten numbers in the " S colum" rows 26 thru 36, but again all I can get is exactly what I typed, the formula. Can anyone help me?

Your cell could be formatted as text.  Right click the cell, choose Format Cells, and click the number tab.  If Text is highlighted at left, change it to somthing else like General or Number.  Then click OK and re-enter the formula.

This usually means the cell is formatted as TEXT.

Change the cell format to General then re-enter the formula (in that sequence).

You may be in 'Show Function Mode'. Press the toggle switch keyboard CTRL+` (e.g. left 'smart' quote or lower case tillde, just above the tab) to switch Excel's display between the two.
