Office application version does not match--this is the error message I get when I open any Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Question

I bought a Lenovo recently and it had a version of Office on it.  I had to enter a product key within 30 days or the applications would stop working.  The other option was to delete the Office applications and install a store-bought version, which I did.  But now, whenever I open one of the Office apps, I get this error 'Office application version does not match'.  I am afraid to comply with the Microsoft authenticity checking.  This came up with the most recent round of Microsoft updates.  So that means I won't be able to get any updates if I don't comply.  Any suggestions?
