Can anybody please explain how to turn off automatic date function on excel

If by "automatic date function" you mean Excel's tendency to translate entries that appear to be dates, into dates, it cannot be turned off.

If you want to enter a string that looks like a date; e.g:  1-5 , you must either format the cell as text prior to entering the value, or precede the entry with a single quote  (e.g '1-5) which will not show up on the worksheet itself, but tells Excel to treat the entry as text.
