I am a student, and lecture notes are uploaded with embedded audio online in a docx format from a mac.  Why can I on a PC not listen to the audio, or use word with the same functionality as someone using the MAC version?

How was the audio embedded? What format?

docx is a standard. Not taking into account implementational errors, the result should be the same on both Mac and Windows. However, if somebody inserted content as some kind of binary object then that content doesn't necessarely work in both environments. It will only work if the 'processor' of that content is available in both environments.
