Difference between Range and Region?

I have seen information in books and web sites saying how to select a range of cells and at other places I read the following:

If you press Ctrl + A, it selects the region and if you press it again, it selects the entire sheet.

I am confused with the terms range and region. Please explain with example and provide as much detail as possible. Thank you!

Imran

A Range is any collection of cells, whether filled with values or not; in addition, this collection of cells can be contiguous or not. As for a Region, all the cells must have values in them and the collection of cells must be contiguous. A contiguous collection of cells means each cell touches at least one other cell horizontally, vertically or diagonally (corner to corner). The cells A1, B1, C2 are considered contiguous whereas A1 and C2 would not be.

Rick, I am marking this as answered. Thank you. I was confused, you know when I see the things like selecting a region, selecting a range. They both are doing the same thing and that is to select more cells. Your answer made me understand. Thank you again!
