Error Message: Too Many Files Open

We're experiencing the error message: Too Many Files Open, when attempting to open a Word 2011 document from a network share.  The file will open normally if moved to the local machine.  There are no other Office 2011 files open.  Is there a reason that Word will not open the file directly (with a double click) from a network share?

There are a few weird issues with accessing documents from a network share and they vary per network configuration. Rather than listing all of the possible solutions here, one of our Office for Mac Word MVPs, John McGhie, has written an article with several things to try:
