Thank you Suzanne for this information.

I suppose that there is no specific information regarding Word/Office 2010 on this subject.

My conclusion is that Microsoft probably claims that new versions are supposed to have less bugs. Wishful thinking!

On the opposite, the same old bugs will always reappear  (over many years) in the heritage of each new upgrade version, regardless what program,! Your text  ("regardless version") confirms my opinion.

I have been Googling too ! ... This frequent error does NOT appear because the users changed some settings (why should they?) , but is definetly caused by Microsoft software. It  can occur not only after installations but also at random, at any time and using any Microsoft Office related program.

IIRC, I found this KB article as a result of googling for the error message, and the answer to this question in many forums (regardless of version) was pretty much the same--the gist of this article.

If the error message is "Word could not create the work file. Check the Temp environment variable," see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2027053.

    Hello Suzanne,

This link points to an article which is specific for Word 2007.

However Jerry (and myself) are concerned by the same issue using Word 2010.

Maybe there is some article specific for Word 2010 used within XP ?

At this time, I'm using both Office 2003 and Office 2010, untill I have sufficient confidence and practice with 2010 (The Oulook versions are however NOT compatible on one single machine and for that reason  outlook 2010 is now not installed. But it has been before for a while running side by side , which generated many problems and maybe a few leftovers causing hidden problems.

Anyway, I messed up the environment variables locations (and probably the registry values as well) I will open in next days another topic on the same issue as started here by Jerry but will give more specific information, about detected parameters which I suspect to be wrong.

I will try to add links to screenshots made in Explorer and registry.
