Hello, I'm confused about what type of server the Microsoft Windows server is.
Windows servers can be application servers, database servers (Active Directory with LDAP), web servers (IIS), and so on, depending on what i install in addition to roles and features wizard, making it difficult to define what Windows Server is.

As for windows platform, are you referring to those who are running the windows servers like physical machines/VM and cloud?
From windows side, operating system of server are referring to Win server 2012, 2016 and etc, which could be installed on either physical machines and VMs.
You can also choose to install different roles for the server depending on your requirements, same as your understanding. The IPD Guidance provides you means to validate design decisions with the business to ensure that the solution meets the requirements for both business and infrastructure stakeholders. With feature/role configured on that server, you could call it as mail server/Database server.
