Research tool options missing

I have office 2010 installed on multiple computers on some it seems the reasearch tools are missing the only one they have is

thesaurus and the translate tool, I don't have any of the other options or even option to add them, I looked online for a solution and can't seem to find it, I thought maybe the reasearch tools was an optional addition in the install so I went back to the installer to add features but no such thing is there. Why are some of the installs missing this option and how do I get it working in them.

I spent over two hours on this and couldn't find a resolution on google/bing but managed to figure it out (at least for my user) so here you go:

open word.

type in test

hold down alt and click test to open the research pane

At the bottom of the reasearch pane click research options

Highlight the problem reference book 'Encarta Dictionary....' then click Update/Remove

Click the 'Microsoft Office Online Services' and select remove.  Click yes when prompted if you want to remove it.

Navigate back to the 'Research Options' pane and click 'Add Services'

Select Microsoft and add them - if it isn't listed the address is http://office.microsoft.com/Research/query.asmx

Hope this helps,

  • J

I am having the same problem.  The only choices for help are:

    All Reference Books

       Thesaurus: English (U.S.)

       Translation

I checked Research Options, but the only listings are for the French, Spanish and U.K. versions of the Thesaurus.  Other Services just lists "Can't find it?".  Nothing is listed for Add Services.. and Update/Remove.. just lists the other Thesaurus translations.

    I need definitions, ASAP.

    Thank you in advance.

The Research Pane shows up and all, the only thing that is missing like I said is the research options such as the dictionary bing and other research helps that show up and some of my other installations I don't really want to go through the hassle of reinstalling it and then running into the same problem as this doesn't show up as a feature or add-on in the install options and yes it's in all office products I have Pro Plus installed 32-bit version on 15 comps and as I said only some of them seem to have this issue

Is the ‘Research’ option missing only in Word or in all office applications?

Try the short cut key for research ‘Ctrl + Mouse Click’ and check if the reserach pane appears.

If this does not work then try to repair the office 2010 installation and check if it helps.

I am having this same issue. On some PC's in word when I right click on a word, select lookup I have Bing, Encarta Dictionary: English (North America), English Assistance: US  Factiva Works, High Beam Research, Thomson Gale Compay. I have quite a few entries under research options as well.

On other installs there are only limirted research options.

    It's Baffling....
