in word 2010 and excel 2010 I want to create a table with headers on each column. the first column header would be address  2nd zip  3rd owner 4th direction and notes. Sort by one column without including the header in the sort. each row should move as one with the item sorted. I then want to import that data into http://gmaps.kaeding.name/ orhttp://www.batchgeo.com/ .

Give the advanced maps from http://www.easymapmaker.com a try.

You can add your contacts and filter the data by themes  or generic filters(age, city, country, whatever you have in your data).  You can also find what data items are a certain distance from other items.

That is the way Sort works in Word by default. The entire table is sorted based on the column you select (you can also select second and third columns to refine the sort). In the Sort Text dialog, just make sure that under "My list has," you have "Header row" selected. It will be selected by default if you have designated the top row(s) of your table as (a) heading row(s).

It is only if you want to sort one column without affecting others that you need to use Excel.

Excel would probably be the best way to go as that is what batchgeo seems to suggest as well.

    • Enter your data in Excel
    • Select all the data (so don't select the headers)
    • On the 'Home' tab, choose 'Sort & Filter' and pick 'Sort A to Z'.

The data will be sorted according to the first column and all other columns will move data around accordingly.

Then just select everything in your spreadsheet (including the headers this time), copy it, and paste it in to batchgeo.
