Insertion point disappears, functionality blocked

Windows 7 (64-bit) Aero enabled

Office 2010 (64-bit)

All updates applied

System Desktop: i980x 12GB RAM, Microsoft mouse, NVIDIA 480 with all updates applied

When working with medium-sized documents with imbedded pictures on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems Word behaves normally for some time but after adding more screen shots or navigating to other applications and back to Word, the insertion point disappears. I can still type where the arrow pointer cusor is placed. I cannot however add a Reference Caption or Cross Reference as these dialogs do not populate. This can only be resolved by closing and restarting Word.

Word has never been this unstable. I am losing countless hours of production with this issue. I can submit the document in question but as I said, it works for awhile and then fails. I suspect a memory leak.

It's not so much the video card as the video driver. The video driver is reposonsible for painting the screen. If there is a wierd interaction between an app, like Word, and the video driver/slash card then, presto chango something is missing. The thing is, you say the insertion point is still there, so Word hasn't lost it, but the video card/drive has. The problem is in video, even though it may be triggered by Word.

Actually think I've seen similar problem on my machine, losing the insertion point. I've got dual monintors too, and I've found that just mousing over to another app in the other window, clicking on it and then clicking back in the problem app. It's a "voodoo" fix (ie "it works, but don't ask me why..."). I've found it annoying, but not fatal.

Try updating your video card driver. It hasn't worked for me, yet, but I keep on hoping.

Well, if it's the video card why do all of my other applications, even additional instance of Word work okay?

I had this problem on 32-bit Word 2010 and (painfully) uninstalled it and installed the 64-bit version to see if it fixed the problem. It didn't.

And it does this in both 32 and 64-bit versions?
