Setting numbering value in multilevel lists

Good day

I created a table for my equations just like in the blog below.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft\_office\_word/archive/2006/10/20/equation-numbering.aspx

I need the equation to reflect the chapter number i.e. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and so on. But when I get to 3.1 and try to set the numbering value to 3.1 or any other number, I get a list containing the numbers that I skipped. So in one box I'll have 2, 3 and 3.1. If I set it to 3.3, I'll get 2, 3, 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3. I can't link the list to my headings as I'm using a different format for my chapter headings. Please I need help.

Best regards

I'm familiar with styles. I'm using a user defined style as I was given specific instructions as to the format of my report. I've completed the report and I have all my equations already written. If I try to change the style of the equations caption to be the same as the level 2 of my chapter headings, the caption numbering follows the heading numbering and the two lists are separate ones. Isn't it possible to have two separate lists in one document?

The structure of my document is

    Chapter 1INTRODUCTION Arial 16 Heading 1 1.1  Background Arial 12 Heading 2

    :

    :

1.1.1 Turbulent particulate flow Arial 13 heading 3

    And so on.

The equation captions need to be in the format (1.1), (1.2) where the first digit is the chapter number and the second digit is the position of the diagram within the chapter.

I tried reading the field code link you sent me and could not make head or tail of it. I have no idea what it means.

You will have to set up a paragraph style that you want to use for caption numbers and apply it to the relevant text paragraphs. Then you will have to incorporate that style into the same multilevel list as the style used for your headings. The general principles are explained at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html. The article uses the built-in headings as examples, but you can use any styles. You can even mix headings and non-headings, which is what I would suggest in this case.

However, knowing a little more about the structure of your document would definitely help. Are you using headings at all for numbering? Are you familiar with styles?

If you are not familiar with the use of styles, Suzanne's suggestion might actually be easier. You can insert SEQ fields via Insert tab | Quick Parts | Field. To learn more about SEQ fields, see this article:

    Field codes: Seq (Sequence) field

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/field-codes-seq-sequence-field-HP005186190.aspx?CTT=1

In particular, as indicated in the article, you can restart SEQ fields by using the \r switch.

Or, as others have suggested, use a SEQ field for the equation number and a StyleRef field to pick up the chapter number (this will require manually restarting the SEQ field in each chapter, but that's less iffy than restarting auto numbering).

Instead of renumbering manually, set up a multilevel list where your heading is level 1 and whatever style you use for equation numbering is level 2.

    See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.
