CONFIGURE OPERATING SYSTEM

Question

I recently installed Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 on my computer.  when I try to open an attachment in my e-mail that was microsoft word 97 2003 document, i receive an error that the operating system is not presently configured to run this application.  What do I need to do to allow me to open these attachments?

Save the attachment to the hard disk and then use File>Open in Word to open it.

You may have a different problem\or have received a corrupt document.

Does the issue affect all files that you have received via e-mail?

Are you otherwise able to use Word to create files, save them and re-open them.

What version of Office are you using?

Does not work... tried it and it only associates FILES with Word.

Still getting same message at other person who started this thread!

The proposed solution here is incorrect to this problem.

 have it also and found it does not work!  Still get the same message.

Suggestion associates the files with Word, BUT still gives me the message that Win 8.1 needs to be CONFIGURED.

So, what gives Microsoft???
