Open the template directly from Word instead of double clicking it.
My vote should not have been a YES. I was only offered one vote button and thought I was going to be able to choose YES or NO. Anyway, the answer wasn't helpful because it applies to Word 2004. The file extensions seem to have changed for Word 2010 and I can't find the template.
If it is the Normal template you are trying to change, there are ways to change defaults without actually opening it. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm. If it is a different document template, then you can tell what template a document is based on from the Summary tab of the file Properties. In Word 2010, this is on the Info tab of the backstage (File tab).
Open what?
Answer was "Open the template..." That doesn't help me know the name of the template or where to find it; so I still don't know how to get at the template.
Thank you, Nin
