Go to your user temp folder (in your Roaming Profile) and will all applications closed - preferably after a fresh reboot - delete all the abandoned temp files. Then try deleting the doc again.

I don't have Word open and yet I still get the same error message when I try to delete the file, i.e. 'the action can’t be completed because the file is open in microsoft office word'. I have checked the file properties and the 'read only' box is not ticked. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Files written to CD/DVD will always have the read only attribute set.  After copying them back to the hard disk, it is necessary to right click on them in Windows Explorer and select Properties and uncheck the read only attribute.

To delete the file, you that you have, you will need to close Word first.
