Hi,

This is a word file extension of office 2007 & office 2010. you can suggest to your friend either use same office which you have or you can save the doument by save as option and then choose word 97-2003 and then save then your friend will able to open it. and one more thing your friend can install the compatibility pack of office then he will open all these files. use this link for download http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

This is neither a Windows 7 nor a hotmail issue.

An X is not "attaching itself." Starting without Microsoft Word 2007,

the default format has changed from .doc to .docx (and similarly with

    other programs in Microsoft Office).

For your friends to be able to open your documents, one of three

    things has to happen:

    1. They need to upgrade from their older version of Office to Office
    2. If they have an older version of Office, they can download and

install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and

    PowerPoint 2007 File Formats" at

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

    or http://tinyurl.com/m34dha

    1. When you sand them files, use "Save as" instead of "Save" to save

it in .doc format instead of the default .docx.
