excel cannot be saved in the current format

I open a .xls with Office 2010.  When I try to SAVE, I get thisexcel cannot be saved in the current format...  It wants to save as .xlsx  -   How can I avoid this?  Very irritating and time consuming.

Try using Save As, rather than Save. Save would probably use the default file type, xlsx.

    To save only this file in .xls format follow the steps below.

    1.      When the file is open, click on File> Save as

    2.      In the save as Window, click on drop down beside ‘save as type’ andselect ‘Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls)’ and click on save.

    To save all the files in .xls format, follow the steps below:

    1.      Open a new Excel file

    2.      Click on File> Options

    3.      Click on ‘save’ on the left hand side in the Excel options window.

    4.      Click on the dropdown beside ‘Save files in this format’ and select ‘‘Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls) ’

    5.      Click ok, restart Excel.
